Matteo Gilfillan & Associates Inc. provides Canadian Building and Fire Code consulting services in the fields of fire protection and life safety.  Our staff have an in-depth understanding of National and Provincial Building and Fire Code requirements.  We apply this understanding to provide a high level of service to architects, engineers, developers, private owners, and the local authorities.

We are focused on providing quality Code consulting services to our clients through understanding the needs of the project and the client, having expert knowledge of the Code requirements and their intent, and by maintaining a professional approach with both clients and authorities

Matteo GilfillanLET, B.A.S., C.E.T., CFPS, President

Over his 15 year career as a Code consultant, Matteo has conducted fire and life safety reporting with respect to the requirements of the Ontario and National Fire and Building Codes and their associated Standards on numerous projects. He has provided consulting services on a variety of architectural and fire rating designs and concepts, and developed alternative solutions for unique building designs and features.

Through his extensive experience in the fire and life safety industry, Mr. Gilfillan obtained a Licensed Engineering Technologist (LET) designation with the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) to practice professional engineering in fire and life safety studies and reporting related to Building and Fire Codes and Standards. Matteo is also a Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.), a National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS), and is a Qualified Designer holding a Building Code Identification Number (BCIN).

Matteo is involved in all aspects of construction projects, including: consulting during the pre-design, design, construction, renovation, tenant fit-up and turnover phases. Mr. Gilfillan also conducts building inspections to identify Fire and Building Code deficiencies in existing and newly constructed / occupied buildings.

Matteo is a member of the ULC S100A Committee (and related Task Groups) that is responsible for the development of CAN/ULC-S100 series Standards for fire testing. Mr. Gilfillan is also the past President of the Canadian Fire Safety Association (CFSA), an organization dedicated to the dissemination of fire education across Canada.

Matteo is actively involved in the development of the National and Ontario Building and Fire Codes. He is a member of the OBC Part 3 Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) and has participated in previous TACs for Building and Fire Code changes.

Mr. Gilfillan lectures extensively on Building and Fire Codes, life safety, and Fire Safety Plan training.

Matteo is a graduate from the Fire Protection Engineering Technology program at Seneca College and holds a Bachelor of Applied Science degree from Bemidji State University in Minnesota.
